Source: NCAA Division I Council [Competition Oversight Committee (Olympic Sports Liaison Committee)]

Effective Date:Immediate

Proposal Category: Amendment

Topical Area: Amateurism and Athletics Eligibility

Rationale: In June 2019, the United States Olympic Committee announced that it had formally changed its name to the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee. The change represented the USOPC's continued support and inclusion of Paralympic athletes. In partnership with the USOPC, NCAA legislation should be updated to reflect similar support and inclusion of Paralympic athletes. Paralympic student-athletes have voiced the need to include Paralympic references throughout NCAA legislation. The same benefits and opportunities that are afforded to Olympic Games and Pan American Games participants should be provided to student-athletes who participate in the Paralympic Games and Parapan American Games.

Division I Commitment addressed by proposal: The Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion.

Is the proposal consequential or nationally significant?: Yes. Providing benefits and opportunities to Paralympic student-athletes is consequential and nationally significant.
