Effective Date:Immediate

Proposal Category: Amendment

Topical Area: Awards, Benefits and Expenses

Rationale: Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for neurological development, resilience and performance for student-athletes. They are required for normal growth and nutrition and must be consumed since they cannot be synthesized naturally by the body. While a food-first approach should always be encouraged, dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids is inadequate across all age groups. This is predominantly true among student-athletes with unique dietary intakes and preferences. With the addition of omega-3 fatty acids, alongside current permissible supplements such as energy bars, protein supplements, and vitamins and minerals, institutions will be well positioned to continue to serve the health needs of their student-athletes.

Estimated Budget Impact: Cost associated with providing additional supplements.

Impact on Student-Athlete's Time (Academic and/or Athletics): None.
