Major Infractions Case

University of West Florida

October 31, 2025

Pursuant to Bylaw 19.10.6, this negotiated resolution has no precedential value. Sports betting violations occurred at West Florida and then at Northern Arizona when Dustin Smith, a former women’s soccer coach, placed impermissible bets on professional and collegiate games from February 2020 through June 2024. The violations in this case originally came to light when Northern Arizona received information that Smith, who was a women’s soccer associate coach, was involved in sports betting activities — for professional and college sports — on two different online betting platforms. The school notified the NCAA enforcement staff of the activities, which indicated that the betting behaviors had started at his previous school, and the enforcement staff then contacted West Florida to open a collaborative investigation into Smith’s behavior when he was an assistant coach for the women’s soccer team.

A three-year show-cause order during which any employing member school will require Smith to seek and participate in gambling counseling and participate in meaningful sports betting education; and if Smith should be employed by any NCAA member school during that show-cause order, he will be suspended from 15% of the women’s soccer regular-season contests during his first season of employment.
