NCAA ID

The NCAA Eligibility Center creates an NCAA ID for everyone who registers for academic and amateurism certification or creates a profile account. The NCAA ID ties student-athlete information to many NCAA systems.

NCAA ID Lookup Application

The NCAA ID Lookup application allows a user to find the assigned NCAA ID of a prospective or enrolled student-athlete that has registered with the Eligibility Center.

How to Search for the NCAA ID for a Student-Athlete

  1. On the NCAA ID Lookup page, enter information into the required fields indicated in red (e.g., last name, state, etc.). Last name must be an exact match.
  2. Click the "Search" button to return a list of student-athletes that match the search criteria.
  3. The list may be refined by entering information into the "Search" box. he list may be sorted by clicking on the table headers. Pagination may be controlled by selecting the number of items to display per page.
  4. From the list, click on the hyperlinked NCAA ID next to the name of the correct student-athlete. A dialog window will display additional details about the student-athlete. If this is the correct student-athlete, click the "Yes" button and the NCAA ID will be placed into the appropriate field(s). Additional details about each student-athlete's high school can be viewed by clicking on the plus icon next to the NCAA ID.

Search Hints

  1. Enter data into more input fields to decrease the number of student-athletes in the list.
  2. The name fields are not case sensitive. The first name field is a wildcard search that requires at least two characters, but does not have to be filled out completely. For example, entering "bill" will return student-athletes with the first name of "Bill", "Billy", and "Billie." Last name must be entered exactly as spelled in the Eligibility Center database.
  3. The city, state, and country fields are the student-athletes address used when the student-athlete registered with the Eligibility Center. This may not be his or her current address.
  4. Checking sports in the sport list will filter student-athletes who indicate they plan to participate in those sports when registering with the Eligibility Center.
  5. Checking the "Only Show Students on IRL or NLI" will restrict search results to student-athletes who are currently on an institution's IRL or have signed a National Letter of Intent. By default, this option is selected when entering the NCAA ID Lookup application from Compliance Assistant. For Division I and Division II the "Account Type" is automatically set to "Certification" when this option is checked.
  6. The "Clear Filters" button will clear filters and allow the user to start a new search.

How to Create an NCAA ID Number for a Prospective Student-Athlete or Student-Athlete

This option is only available in those systems in which a student-athlete may not have an NCAA ID assigned.
This does not apply to the NCAA Transfer Portal since the NCAA ID cannot be created by a member institution for a student entry into the transfer portal.

Note: Creating an NCAA ID is not a common practice. Creating an NCAA ID may be necessary for prospective student-athletes associated with specific student-athlete reinstatement requests or Division III student-athletes that have not created an Eligibility Center profile account.

Users should attempt to look up an NCAA ID prior to creating an NCAA ID for a prospective student-athlete or enrolled student-athlete. All Division I and Division II student-athletes and prospective student-athletes should be registered with the Eligibility Center and as a result, already have an NCAA ID. Users do not need to create an NCAA ID for these student-athletes. Division III student-athletes are not required by NCAA legislation to register with the Eligibility Center, however, they may have registered at some point in time and have an NCAA ID. If the student-athlete or prospective student-athlete cannot be found using the NCAA ID Lookup feature, the user may create an NCAA ID.

  1. Search for the student-athlete or prospective student-athlete on the NCAA ID Lookup. If a student-athlete or prospective student-athlete cannot be found, then the user may create an NCAA ID. Click the "Create NCAA ID" button below the empty search result list.
  2. Enter information into the appropriate fields on the NCAA ID Creation screen and click the "Create NCAA ID" button.
  3. If duplicate entries are found, the system will not create a new ID, but instead provide the user the opportunity to select the student-athlete or prospective student-athlete that matches the criteria entered.
  4. If successfully created, the NCAA ID number will populate the appropriate field in the application with the newly created NCAA ID.

Note: The user will only need to create an NCAA ID for an individual once. All NCAA IDs previously created will be listed in subsequent searches.
